Working with PHP "safe mode"

Written 18/02/04

The release of 2.21 has lead to more people trying uploading documents as articles. This turns out to be problematic if your ISP has PHP "safe mode" enabled. Among those which do is 34SP which is unfortunate as this has been a popular choice for Opus installations to date. However a combination of a code audit by The Hug, testing by Denis, webmaster of Histon & Impington, and the help of Ian from 34SP's technical support has now resolved this issue.

So if you want to upload documents as articles (which you will if you're a local council site for example) and you intend to use a hosting ISP which operates PHP in safe mode then before purchasing your hosting account ask them if they will enable safe_mode_GID for your account and if they will place a copy of pdftotext (part of the Xpdf package) in the safe_mode_exec_dir directory on their server.

34SP are happy to do this for you so when you purchase your hosting account from 34SP (hopefully entering "milton" in the "Referral username" box when you sign up ;-)) tell them you intend to use Opus and want your account set up as described above and they will be happy to do that for you.
